A Separate Peace Practice Test

The main idea this item tests is recognizing which sport is repeatedly linked to Gene’s experiences in the material. In the text, Gene’s world is tightly woven with the Devon School’s rowing environment—the river, the crew practices, and the sense of teamwork that comes with being on a rowing team. That setting recurs throughout Gene’s story and shapes many of his interactions and decisions, making rowing the sport most closely associated with his activities.

Although other athletic feats appear and Finny famously shines in various sports, the narrative repeatedly anchors Gene’s moments with a crew and the river. Rowing serves as the backdrop for much of the action involving Gene, so it’s the best fit for the sport linked to his activities.
